Step One: Position Of The Saddle

Place the saddle slightly forward on the horse's withers. Next, press down on the pommel and slide the saddle rearward until it stops at the resting-place which is dictated by each horse's conformation. Repeat this procedure several times until you feel the saddle stop in the same spot repeatedly, well behind the shoulder blade.

Resist the temptation to place the saddle too far forward on the withers. This is a very common fitting mistake and can interfere with your horse's soundness and movement.

Although the above saddle may not be an optimal fit (see level seat) it does show the differences as to how saddle placement improves balance and significantly frees up the scaplula.

Tip from Angela - placement of the saddle should be made in one, firm, even motion. Resist the temptation to use several short, jerky motions and be sure to look away while you do this as believe me you will unintentionally stop the motion and make the saddle stop where you believe it should sit! Do this two or three times to make sure it stops in the same place each time and, to obtain the correct feel. You cannot begin to assess the other points unless your placement is correct. You may also want to make a chalk mark on the horse where the flap lays with the saddle placed in your normal placement to see how much you have been off! You can later do this with a pad by holding the pad and pommel in one hand and pad / cantle in your other hand making sure the motion back is the same as described above. Get into the habit of doing this EVERY TIME you put a saddle on a horse and you will be doing yourself and your mount a great service.
